G I S

Coordinate System default

When you import data from a new CS, VNS will ask you if you want to make it the new default. The default CS is the one VNS uses for those components that VNS creates (cameras, vectors, lights, etc.). It is set in the Planet Options Editor. When placing VNS cameras at real-world GPS-measured locations, my VNS views have best matched photographs when the DEM CS is the default CS.

Thematic Maps to drive Diffuse Color

You can use database attributes to drive any of the materials colors of any 3D Object placed by a vector. Vectors can be hard-linked or Search Query linked to the 3DO. Point Thematic maps can also be used so the same vector that places a house can determine its rotation and wall color. Three fields are needed in the DB to define the color, one each R, G, and B. Color values are 0-255 or if they are not, you can use the multiplier field in the Thematic Map to scale them.

Viewshed Analysis

VNS is not a viewshed tool and should not be used as one. Global Mapper includes viewshed analysis and is
invaluable for a its other data processing tools. Most GIS applications have more sophisticated viewshed analysis. Manifold is an affordable GIS app that can perform viewshed analysis with its Surface Tools add-on. Keep in mind that any viewshed analysis using a DEM will not take into account foliage height and its effect on line of sight.
